Our Recruitment Due Diligence Framework

We take recruitment seriously. All instructors and staff undergo a rigorous due diligence process before being approved to deliver training on behalf of NATC.

1. Qualifications & Certifications

Non-negotiable โ€” we verify authenticity, relevance, and expiry.

Swimming Teachers

  • Level 2 Swimming Teacher qualification (or equivalent)
  • Nationally recognised swim teaching qualification
  • Current CPR/AED competency (annual refresh)
  • Up-to-date safeguarding and CPD
  • National Rescue Award or equivalent lifeguard qualification (desirable)
๐Ÿ‘‰ Due diligence check: Always request original certificates and independently verify with awarding bodies where possible.

2. Safeguarding & Legal Compliance

Critical โ€” we work with children and vulnerable people.

Required Checks

  • Enhanced DBS Check (with barred list check if applicable)
  • Safeguarding training (recent and relevant)
  • Right to work in the UK
  • Identity verification (passport, driving licence)
๐Ÿ‘‰ Best practice: We don't rely on 'they have a DBS' โ€” we check the issue date, update service status, and that it matches ID exactly.

3. Experience & Competence

Qualifications don't guarantee good delivery.

We Look For

  • Swimming teaching experience (not just 'qualified')
  • Experience with different age groups and abilities (toddlers, children, nervous swimmers)
  • Ability to manage groups safely in poolside environments
  • Strong communication and child development skills

Scenario-Based Interview Questions

  • 'What would you do if a child panics or becomes distressed in the water?'
  • 'How do you adapt your teaching for children with different learning needs?'
  • 'Describe a time you managed a safeguarding concern.'
๐Ÿ‘‰ We may also request a practical assessment or micro-teach session as part of our selection process.

4. Reputation & References

This is often where issues surface.

Our Standards

  • Minimum of 2 references (ideally recent employers)
  • We specifically ask about: reliability, professional conduct, safeguarding concerns
  • We look for consistency between CV, interview, and references
๐Ÿ‘‰ We take references seriously and contact them directly. Character references are not accepted.
